Record Breaking Week for Cruise in Halifax

October 6, 2009, Halifax, N.S – The Port of Halifax is celebrating a record-breaking week for cruise, handling 16 cruise ships in 5 days with a total capacity of 27,657 passengers. Thursday is expected to be a record day with over 11,000 passengers expected in Port.

“Fall is prime time for cruise in our Region and the Port of Halifax has become a popular destination with many multiple-ship days this cruise season,” said Cathy McGrail, Manager of Cruise Development for the Halifax Port Authority.

The Port of Halifax provides a safe harbour for cruise ships. Within the past two weeks Halifax has accommodated several requests for vessels that have been diverted from other ports due to weather, and these vessels stayed overnight in our Port. Today, for instance, a total of 6 cruise ships are now expected in the Port of Halifax with one of those vessels diverted because of weather.

Over 85,000 cruise passengers have visited the Port of Halifax since Labour Day.

The direct impact from cruise this season is estimated at $50 million, to our region, from passenger, crew, and cruise line expenditures. Each cruise ship visit equates to approximately 2.3 direct person years of work in the local economy.
