Ports of Hamilton and Halifax forge closer ties to promote short-sea shipping

September 18 , 2009, Halifax, NS - Officials from the Hamilton Port Authority were in Halifax yesterday to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Halifax Port Authority aimed at advancing the development of short-sea shipping service opportunities.

“We recognize that the strategic location of both ports provides a cost effective and efficient gateway for maritime commerce flowing into and out of the Great Lakes Region and the St. Lawrence Seaway,” said Bruce Wood, the Port of Hamilton’s President & CEO. “By promoting short-sea shipping opportunities with Halifax, customers in the heart of North America could access the many connections that the Port of Halifax can provide to markets worldwide.”

As part of the MOU, the two ports will further evaluate the business case for short-sea shipping, identify potential customers and service operators, and plan for marketing of joint opportunities.

“As part of business development for the Port of Halifax, we are exploring the potential for short-sea shipping links with Hamilton in a more formalized way through this agreement signed between our two ports,” said Karen Oldfield, Halifax Port Authority President & CEO.
