Port of Halifax Ready to Support Shipbuilding Program

The Port of Halifax is preparing to support the Federal shipbuilding program with today’s announcement of an agreement to begin building vessels at Halifax’s Irving Shipyard.  Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Minister of National Defence, Peter MacKay, were in Halifax to announce an agreement in principle to advance the construction of 21 combat vessels under the $25 billion project.

“Soon Halifax and Canada will begin feeling the benefits from the federal shipbuilding program, from stevedores at the Port of Halifax to domestic suppliers of ship components.  When work begins on this federal program, businesses involved in the Port of Halifax supply chain will be examples of how this program will generate wide economic benefits,” said Karen Oldfield, President and Chief Executive Officer, Halifax Port Authority.  “The Richmond Terminals $73 million project underway, co-funded by the Federal Government and Halifax Port Authority, will be completed in time to allow the Port to work cooperatively on supply logistics.”

Port of Halifax Expresses Support for Action Plan on Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness

December 7, 2011 – HALIFAX, N.S. – The Port of Halifax applauds today’s announcement by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and U.S. President Barack Obama to implement an action plan that will assist the flow of trade and people in a secure and efficient manner in North America.

"I fully support the Prime Minister’s announcement that this initiative cements the most important trading relationship in the world. It helps Canada's major ports facilitate trade with the United States leading to more jobs for Canada all along critical supply chains moving import and export goods to market," says Karen Oldfield, President and CEO of the Halifax Port Authority. "This Border Action Plan is an important piece in the economic puzzle ensuring a more fluid and secure border as well as providing better access to the largest economy in the world."

The Action Plan on Perimeter Security and Economic Competiveness focuses on four areas of cooperation: addressing threats early; facilitating trade, economic growth and jobs; integrating cross-border law enforcement; and improving critical infrastructure and cyber-security. The Action Plan on Regulatory Cooperation aims to help reduce barriers to trade, lower costs for consumers and business, and create economic opportunities on both sides of the border.

“Both Canada and the United States are trading nations. This action plan addresses key elements to efficiently move goods and people across our border”, says Oldfield. “Every time a container vessel enters Halifax Harbour it generates the equivalent of three person years of work. Ports and communities benefit when trade flows; from stevedores to truckers, trade means economic activity and that spells jobs.”

Over 240,000 cruise tourists visit Halifax in award-winning season

October 27, 2011 – HALIFAX, N.S. – The Jewel of the Seas is docked at the Halifax Seaport today, bringing as many as 2,000 cruise passengers to the region for the day. It is the last vessel to call Halifax in what has been a highly successful, award-winning cruise season.

In 2011, 122 vessels called Halifax, including seven inaugural visits. More than 240,000 people have visited Halifax via cruise ship this year, including about 10,000 on Oct. 6 – the busiest day of the season.

“It has been another tremendous season for cruise in Halifax,” said Halifax Port Authority Manager of Cruise Development, Cathy McGrail. “We’ve maintained visitor totals well over 200,000 for four years running, which is a tremendous accomplishment and a boon for the city and province.”

The cruise industry in Halifax contributes an estimated $50 million in economic impact annually for Nova Scotia, accounting for approximately eight per cent of all tourism for the province.

The season wasn’t just successful in terms of traffic – it was also a season of recognition as the Port of Halifax and its partners received two prestigious cruise honours.

The first was received in March as Halifax earned the Most Efficient Port Services Award from Dream World Cruise Destinations magazine for having the “most efficient combination of pilotage, port agency services, customs clearance and good working relations with the operations departments of cruise lines.”

The second honour, received in December at the Seatrade Europe conference in Hamburg, Germany, came from Seatrade Insider for a “highly commended contribution to Destination of the Year.”

“Between numerous shore excursions and the convenience of shops and services available at the Halifax Seaport and on the waterfront, we believe we have a lot to offer cruise guests,” McGrail said. “The Halifax Port Authority and its many partners work hard to deliver a memorable vacation experience for our guests and we’re thrilled to have received these two awards in recognition of that.”

October 25, 2011 – HAIFA, ISRAEL – Premier Darrell Dexter visited ZIM Integrated Shipping Services Ltd. in Haifa, Israel, today, Oct. 25, to tour the facility and recognize the company's 40-year relationship with the Halifax Port Authority.

"Next April marks four decades of business between our two regions -- a milestone that should be celebrated," said Premier Dexter. "Today's visit was an opportunity to meet with senior executives of the shipping line, including president and CEO Rafi Danieli, to learn about their experiences in Halifax, discuss opportunities to grow the business and promote the Port of Halifax as a key entry point into North America."

The premier noted that Nova Scotia's role as a gateway to international trade relies on the global connections that are made possible through relationships like the one the province and the Port of Halifax have with ZIM.

"I want to thank the team at ZIM for choosing to do business in Nova Scotia," said Premier Dexter. "The province looks forward to many more years of continued co-operation and support with the shipping line."
